Tenerife stargazing tours at Teide: the most impressive astronomical experience in the Canary Islands
Teide National Park is not just Spain's highest volcano. At night, at an altitude of over 2,000 meters, it becomes one of the three best places in the world for stargazing, along with Chile and Hawaii. If you're looking for where to see the stars in Tenerife, the answer is Teide. And on this page, we explain exactly how to do it.
Why Mount Teide is the best place to see the stars in Tenerife
Not all locations in Tenerife are the same for astronomy. The coast has light pollution. Inland towns have cloud cover (sea of clouds). Mount Teide has three conditions that professional astronomers have been seeking for decades:
- Altitude: at 2,000 meters the air is cleaner and more stable, with less atmospheric turbulence
- More than 300 clear nights a year: one of the highest rates in Europe
- Starlight Certification: Teide is a Starlight Reserve, an international recognition that certifies the quality of its night sky
That is why the Teide Observatory is one of the most important in the world. And that is why every night, from our observation point in the National Park, the sky offers a spectacle impossible to see from anywhere else on the island.
What can you see from Mount Teide at night?
This is what our clients observe on a typical tour with professional telescopes:
- Saturn with its rings, perfectly clear, one of the most impressive moments for any visitor.
- Jupiter with its moons: Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto visible in real time
- The Orion Nebula, a gas cloud where new stars are born, 1,300 light years away
- The Andromeda Galaxy, 2.5 million light years away, the farthest visible to the naked eye
- The Milky Way on moonless nights extends from horizon to horizon with a clarity impossible on the coast
- Star clusters such as the Pleiades, the Hercules cluster and dozens more depending on the time of year
Visible objects vary depending on the lunar phase and time of year. On each tour the guide selects the most impressive ones of that specific night.
Stargazing on Mount Teide on your own vs guided tour
Every week there are visitors who climb Teide on their own hoping to see stars and return disappointed. Without a telescope and without a guide, the universe remains white dots.

Looking at the sky is not the same as understanding the universe. Seeing Saturn's rings clearly depends on three key factors: a professional team, an expert guide, and the passion for knowing how to convey it. At Discover Experience, we turn those 'white spots' into an unforgettable experience.

When is the best time to see stars on Mount Teide?
Teide has more than 300 clear nights a year, making astronomical observation possible all year round. But there are factors that make the difference:
The moon phase is the most important factor. On moonless nights the sky is completely dark and you can see galaxies, nebulae and clusters in maximum detail. On full moon nights the satellite illuminates the sky but offers incredible views of its craters and lunar seas through the telescope.
The time of year determines which objects are visible:
- Spring: It is the "galaxy season." Thanks to Earth's orientation, we can look outside our own galaxy to discover the fascinating Virgo Cluster.
- Summer: The Milky Way shines in its maximum splendor, crossing the sky from horizon to horizon. It is also the ideal time to observe globular, open clusters or nebulae such as the Eagle or the Swan. You can also enjoy the Perseid meteor shower.
- Autumn: The great Andromeda Galaxy, the most distant object visible to the naked eye, dominates the sky. The Leonids also accompany us.
- Winter: The clearest sky of the year allows us to enjoy the Orion Nebula, the most spectacular and bright nursery of stars in the sky.
