Summer is, without a doubt, the best time of year for astronomy in Tenerife. The nights are shorter, yes, but the skies they offer are among the most spectacular of the year. The Milky Way shines in all its glory, while star clusters, galaxies, and nebulae begin to dominate the firmament. Plus, the warmer temperatures make spending a night on Mt. Teide a much more comfortable experience than in winter.
In this article we tell you exactly what you can see in the sky of Tenerife during June and July 2026, and the best nights to make the most of your visit.
The Milky Way in summer: the main attraction
If there is one reason to go up Mt. Teide in summer, it is the Milky Way. During the months of June and July, the galactic core reaches its highest point in the night sky, offering a luminous band that crosses the firmament from horizon to horizon with a clarity that is impossible to see from the coast.
From the Teide National Park, at an altitude of over 2,100 meters and with minimal light pollution, the Milky Way becomes a spectacle that many of our clients describe as the most breathtaking moment of their trip to Tenerife.
The best nights to see it are during the new moon, when the sky is completely dark. In June and July 2026, the most favorable moonless nights fall at the beginning and end of each month.
Star clusters and nebulae of summer
Summer brings with it some of the most spectacular deep-sky objects of the year:
- Hercules Cluster (M13) — one of the densest star clusters visible from the Northern Hemisphere. With a telescope, thousands of individual stars can be resolved within this compact sphere of light.
- Eagle Nebula (M16) — home to the famous "Pillars of Creation", an active star-forming region 7,000 light-years away.
- Swan Nebula (M17) — one of the brightest and most spectacular nebulae in the summer sky.
- Open clusters — For example, in the constellation of Scorpio, low on the southern horizon from Tenerife, it offers several beautiful open clusters at this time of year.
- Galaxies — Learn about the galaxies M81 and M82, M101 or M51.
- Planetary Nebulae — Discover the gaseous remnants of dying stars that have shed their outer layers, such as the spectacular Ring Nebula (M57).
All these objects are visible with our telescopes and can be captured with our live astrophotography technology, which reveals their true colors on screen during the tour.
The best nights in June and July 2026 for stargazing at Teide
The lunar phase is the most important factor in planning your stargazing night. These are the best viewing windows in the summer of 2026:
June 2026
From the beginning of June, the moon gradually wanes, leaving increasingly dark nights until around June 21, when it reaches its quarter moon. This is the best time of the month to view the Milky Way and deep-sky objects.
July 2026
From the 13th to the 20th or 21st are the nights with the least lunar interference and the best conditions for observation.
On nights of a waxing or full moon, the spectacle changes but does not disappear: lunar observation with a telescope reveals craters, seas and mountain ranges in astonishing detail.

Is there a meteor shower in June or July in Tenerife?
The great summer meteor shower is the Perseids, but its peak falls in August (between the 11th and 13th). During June and July, meteor activity is low, although sporadic trails can occasionally be seen in the sky.
If your trip to Tenerife coincides with August, the Perseids from Mt. Teide are an exceptional spectacle. If you come in June or July, the tradeoff is the Milky Way in all its glory and deep-sky objects, which many of our clients consider even more breathtaking.
We have a special entry about the August eclipse if you want to know what the rest of the year will bring.
Why Teide is the best place in Tenerife to see the summer sky
Not all spots in Tenerife are the same for stargazing in summer. The coast suffers from light pollution from hotels and towns. The mid-altitude areas are frequently shrouded in clouds. Mount Teide, at over 2,100 meters, rises above all of that.
The conditions that make Teide the ideal place:
- More than 300 clear nights a year — one of the highest rates in Europe
- Altitude of 2,100 meters — cleaner and more stable air, with less atmospheric turbulence
- Starlight Certification — international recognition that certifies the exceptional quality of your night sky
- Minimal or low light pollution — away from urban and tourist centers on the coast
