Milky Way in Tenerife: when, where and how to photograph it (2026)

Tenerife is one of the few places in Europe where you can see the Milky Way with the naked eye, without a telescope and without leaving civilization for more than 30 minutes. The secret is in the altitude, the low light pollution and the atmospheric stability of the Teide National Park. If you have this trip in mind, here is everything you need to know.

When to see the Milky Way in Tenerife?

The galactic nucleus is visible from Tenerife between May and October, but peak visibility falls in June, July and August, when the Milky Way crosses the sky in its maximum splendor and the nights are more stable.
Within each month, the most important variable is the lunar phase. The full moon illuminates the sky and cancels the show. The best nights are those of the new moon and the days close to it — approximately a window of 5-7 days a month in which the sky goes completely dark.

Optimal window in summer 2026:

  • New moon in July: night of the 14th
  • New Moon in August: night of the 12th, coinciding with the maximum of the Perseids and also with an eclipse of the Sun that same month, an exceptional astronomical combo.

Regarding time, the galactic core is highest and brightest between 11:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. in summer.

Where to see it: Teide as a unique setting

Not all dark skies are the same. At 2,000 meters above sea level, the Teide National Park leaves much of the humidity and coastal light pollution below. The result is a sky of exceptional transparency, recognized by the Starlight certification as one of the best in the world.

The best points within the National Park:

  • Llano de Ucanca — wide esplanade with Mount Teide in front.
  • Roques de García — the rock formations in the foreground give depth to any night photograph.
  • Mirador de la Roulette —less crowded, clear horizon to the south.
  • Parador area — easy access, parking, and Teide perfectly centered to the north.

An important detail: access to the National Park at night is allowed, but always check the status of the TF-21 before going up.

How to photograph it: basic settings for any camera

You don't need to be a professional photographer to come back with a spectacular image. With a DSLR or mirrorless camera and a tripod, these settings are a good starting point:

The rule of 500: divide 500 by the focal length of your lens. With a 24mm, the maximum time is 500/24 ​​= ~20 seconds. Any longer and the stars come out as stripes instead of dots.

Recommended equipment:

  • Sturdy tripod — the wind on Teide can ruin a long exposure.
  • Remote trigger or 2 second timer to avoid vibrations.
  • Warm clothing — in summer, at 2,000 meters the temperature can drop below 10°C.

See the Milky Way without a camera: the guided experience

If what you are looking for is to live it rather than photograph it, guided observation completely changes the experience. Seeing the galactic nucleus through a large aperture telescope, understanding what you are looking at and taking away real images captured during the session is something that a solitary night cannot offer you.

  • Download a star map app (SkySafari, Stellarium) to know exactly where the galactic core will be that night.
  • Arrive early: it takes your eyes 20-30 minutes to adapt to total darkness.
  • Avoid the cell phone: the screen destroys adaptation. Use red mode if you need light.
  • Check the weather report the afternoon before — Teide may be clear when the coast is covered, and vice versa.
